Shock has rippled through the Muslim community after the European Union’s Highest Court ruled that businesses can sack Muslim women for wearing the hijab if they work face-to-face with customers or if the wearing of the religious clothing causes workplace conflicts.
The ruling was in response to a case brought by two German Muslim female workers who were asked by their employers not to wear Islamic headscarves while at work.
The decision was met with claims that it would fuel Islamophobia at a time when countries, such as France and Austria, are already eliminating religious freedom for Muslims, apparently to combat extremism.
