EU considers applying green jet fuel mandate to all departing flights

This article is part of our special report Sustainable aviation fuels. The European Commission has confirmed that the upcoming ReFuelEU Aviation initiative will impose a sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) blending mandate, with the EU executive suggesting it will apply to all flights taking off from European airports, regardless of whether their destination is inside the bloc. “We want to have maximum impact. Obviously, in order to do that, we should probably not limit ourselves to internal flights, but rather to all flights that depart from European airports,” said Filip Cornelis, director of aviation with the European Commission’s transport directorate.

This New Miracle Fuel Uses Old Cooking Oil to Fly Jets at Supersonic Speeds

This New Bio-Fuel Uses Old Cooking Oil to Fly Jets With 80% Less Carbon Emissions Michael Verdon A business jet that runs on from cooking oil used to make fries at McDonald’s? Algae turned into Jet-A fuel to run the newest supersonic jet at sound-barrier-breaking speeds? That sounds like something from a sci-fi movie, but the technology is already being used on business jets around the world. Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) is made from waste materials, such as cooking oil or animal fats in restaurants as well as other municipal wastes. But instead of ending up in landfills, the waste materials are turned into jet fuel. SAF cuts CO2 emissions by up to 80 percent, reduces particulate matter (that white tail in the sky) by 90 percent and eliminates sulfur oxide. It also can be used in any aircraft that uses fossil jet fuel, eliminating the need for any type of engine modification.

European Business Aviation SAF Summit — April 20, 2021 — ONLINE – Advanced BioFuels USA

IT’S NOT JUST ABOUT FUELS. IT’S ABOUT THE FUTURE.Building on past events, such as the Virtual 2020 Business Aviation Sustainability Summit in Washington, the Business Aviation Coalition on Sustainable Aviation Fuels is organizing the first-ever European counterpart: the European Business Aviation SAF Summit 2021. The event – held virtually on 20 April – brings together high-level EU officials from all relevant institutions; the EU Commission, Council, and Parliament, and the entire Business aviation value chain under one goal: accelerating the availability and use of sustainable aviation fuels (SAF). The single-largest potential reduction in aviation’s GHG emissions and the key to reaching goals for reducing them will come about through the broad adoption of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) in place of conventional jet fuel in use today as described in the Business Aviation Commitment on Climate Change. There are other, cleaner alternatives to fossil fuels being develo
