Government to make it easier for foreign students to stay

Government to make it easier for foreign students to stay A new bill, which simplifies the stay of foreign students in Russia, and allows them to stay on for three years after graduation, is being introduced for consideration – and is expected to be approved – by the Russian parliament or State Duma after its prior approval by a special governmental commission on 17 May. The bill was developed by the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs “with the aim of establishing a special legal regime” for foreign citizens and stateless persons undergoing full-time education in Russian universities and research organisations. At present foreign students receive a temporary residence permit (TRP) in Russia on a general basis within the quota set by the government, which is valid for three years.

Students ready for legal battle to cut tuition costs

Students ready for legal battle to cut tuition costs Students of leading Russian universities are preparing to file class action lawsuits against their universities, demanding a reduction in the cost of their tuition to reflect the shift to distance learning this year during the COVID-19 pandemic, according to recent statements made by representatives of some student communities in Russia and some local media reports. One lawsuit has already been submitted, by students of Moscow State University (MSU) at the end of November, although no date has yet been set for proceedings by the Moscow court. Similar lawsuits may soon be filed by students from other leading domestic universities, among which are the Russian Presidential Academy of National Economy and Public Administration, the Moscow State Pedagogical University, the Yaroslav-the-Wise Novgorod State University, the Chuvash State University and some other regional Russian universities.
