LAS CRUCES – A Doña Ana County Detention Center officer detailed the injuries he sustained in a knife attack last month during a pretrial detention hearing Friday for an inmate charged with attempted murder.
Eugene Bennett, 28, is accused of stabbing officer Roberto Madrid several times with a makeshift knife or shank inside the detention center on June 17.
Madrid testified he now has hearing loss and permanent damage to his nose after being stabbed multiple times in the face.
Following the attack, Bennett allegedly told investigators that he feared the guards of the jailhouse were going to kill him, according to court documents. He said that stabbing the guard needed to happen and that he could hear guards laughing and joking about him through the vents of the building.
