On May 18, voters in Eugene School District 4j will have the opportunity to choose among the candidates for three seats on the board.
The race for Position 3 features two newcomers to elective politics taking on an incumbent. The race for Position 6 has only one candidate, hoping to replace veteran Jim Torrey, who was appointed to fill a seat unexpectedly vacated mid-term. (A second candidate for Position 6 dropped out too late for his name to be deleted from the ballot.) Two new candidates vie for Position 2. For 12 years, this seat was held by Anne Marie Levis, who withdrew from the race to clear the path for a candidate who, she said, “Can do some of the things I can’t.” Then a second candidate tossed his hat in the ring at the last minute. As the Eugene 4J school district prepares for hybrid learning, the district is taking stock of their personal protective equipment. 4J plans to have different types of PPE in schools.
The district has been purchasing personal protective equipment such as adult and child face coverings, Plexiglas barriers, and backpack sprayers for custodians. 4J Chief Operations Officer Kyle Tucker said they’re also providing signs to help with directing students when walking inside school buildings.
“The other things that we’ve done is that we’ve worked with buildings in ordering signs everything from handwashing signs to social distancing to ‘face coverings required.’ And then we’ve also provided buildings with tape to allow them to help with markings, whether that be on the floor or the wall,” said Tucker.

The Eugene 4J school district announced they will not resume in-person learning until staff for returning grade levels have the opportunity to be vaccinated.
860 doses were given last week to 4J staff, as well as employees with the Lane Education Service District and the Crow-Applegate School District. This includes kindergarten through first grade educators, custodial, food service and transportation staff and people helping with limited in-person instruction.
4J Director of Human Resources Karen Hardin said it may take over a month until staff are fully immunized.
“It might take five weeks to get through round one of all employees, said Hardin. And that really is an estimate. I would hate it if anyone holds us to that and we’re able to go faster or it takes us longer. That’s truly an estimate”
