Looking back at Strawberry Day

Did you know strawberries are the only fruit with their seeds on the outside of their skin? Did you know strawberries are in high in Vitamin C and can be a delicious way to meet your dietary goals of getting plenty of servings of fresh fruits and vegetables? Did you know strawberries are grown in every single state and that we have a large commercial strawberry operation in Etowah County, Norris Farms?  Our team from the Etowah County Extension Office   including Ashley Lawrence, Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program educator; Eric Schavey, Commercial Horticulture Regional Extension Agent; and Karen Howle-Hurst, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program Education Educator  were excited to share all this information and more during Strawberry Day last week at the 5th Street Market. 

Beautiful Rainbow founder to address Food Entrepreneur Conference

Times Staff Report The 2021 Food Entrepreneur Conference sponsored by the Alabama Cooperative Extension Service will be held online April 13-14, and the keynote speaker will be a familiar face to Gadsden-area residents. Chip Rowan, a Gadsden City Schools educator, will detail the inspiring story of the Beautiful Rainbow Café in the Gadsden Public Library. Rowan founded Beautiful Rainbow, which functions as a successful food service operation and an employer/trainer of students with learning disabilities. Twenty-two students have graduated from the program and are now employed in other local establishments. The conference is designed to help beginning and growing food manufacturers learn more about the business and make contacts with people who can help them succeed. It’s an excellent networking and educational opportunity.

Extension, Chamber to host Small Business Workshops

The Etowah County Extension Office and The Chamber of Gadsden & Etowah County will partner in April to host a series of Small Business Workshops. The workshops are a four-part series led by Rick Zapata of the Alabama Cooperative Extension System and co-hosted by The Chamber. The workshops will be held by Zoom video conference, but a hybrid option to attend the sessions in person at the Etowah County Extension Office is available. The sessions will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on April 6, 8, 13 and 15. Together, these workshops will help participants develop a full-fledged business plan. • Session 1: Starting a Business from Scratch Selecting a product or service, business formation, business licenses, risk management.
