Until recently, the BBC’s classical music station, Radio 3, pottered along in relative obscurity, adored by its fans and ignored by everyone else.
Now this once quiet bastion of classical music and “high” culture is constantly in the crosshairs of the culture wars. On one side are the angry voices calling for more women and composers of colour, more cutting-edge music, more world music, more jazz. On the other are those older listeners who are baffled by what the network has become. They long for a return to the old days when you knew where you were.
