Dianne Scott spent hours uncovering the stories of the young men and women from across Nelson and Tasman who served in World War I.
Thousands of Nelsonians served in World War I. Dianne Scott spent hours tracing the lives of four young people who became casualties fighting for King and country. When war broke out in Europe in July 1914, New Zealanders responded with enthusiasm. Over the next four years of conflict, 120,000 Kiwis would sign up to serve in the Great War – a staggering figure given our 1.1 million population. We paid a heavy toll. Of the 100,000 who served overseas, 16,697 were killed, and 41,317 were injured. Another thousand or so died of their injuries in the years following the war’s end.
