The flames forced 20,000 people to spend the night in makeshift shelters. The three largest fires have scorched 406 square miles, an area about the size of san antonio. The ruff and butte fires are burning to the north, 20 under control after consuming 600 homes. We are live in middletown, california this morning with the valley fire tearing through over the weekend. How are people coping with the devastation . Were going to get started, of course, with that breaking news taking place right now on the utah arizona border where eight people are dead and five are still missing swept away in a surprise wave of flash flooding. Emergency officials in the sister towns of hildale and Colorado City say a van and an suv carrying 16 women and children were swamped by a wall of water that washed them downstream. Three managed to survive. The flash flooding was triggered by heavy rains falling in the canyons just north of those two towns. Power and Water Service still out in much of that area. And taking a look at the radar, you can actually see all that rain stretching north of arizona. Some of these storms bringing heavy downpours and lightning and well stay on top of the situation in the southwest. That same system is bringing cooler, wet weather to northern california, as well.
