Kristie Nguyen was unanimously appointed to the Isla Vista Community Services District in February 2019 to fill a vacancy left by Natalie Jordan â the first new appointment in the burgeoning local governmentâs short history. Nguyen served on the board for two years and stepped down at the end of 2020.
Though Nguyen, a 2020 UCSB graduate, served the remainder of Jordanâs term, she chose not to run again.Â

Amidst the COVID-19 pandemic and the financial toll it has caused over the past year, students at UC Santa Barbara have been challenged by high rental prices and uncertain living situations in the college town of Isla Vista.
Shortly after UCSB moved to remote instruction in March 2020, residents in Isla Vista scrambled to break from their leases in light of personal, financial and public health concerns, according to Robin Unander, a practicing attorney and advisor to the Isla Vista Tenants Union, an organization that promotes tenantsâ interests and works against violations of tenantsâ rights in Isla Vista.

In the two months since Good Samaritan established 20 temporary pallet homes in Isla Vista to provide relief to houseless residents beleaguered by the COVID-19 pandemic, the service provider has provided housing, job opportunities and basic needs support to 36 people.
The pallet homes were installed in early December in the parking lot of the Isla Vista Community Center.

Many Isla Vistans showed up on Election Day to cast their ballots at the two local polling stations: Isla Vista Community Center and Santa Catalina Hall. Election night concluded in Santa Barbara with Joe Biden taking the county by a significant lead in the presidential race, according to official tallies.Â
