(Business Insider) â New York justàlegalized marijuanaàfor adults over the age of 21.
The state Senate and Assembly passed theÃÂ billÃÂ late on Tuesday, and Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed the bill into law on Wednesday morning. New York is nowÃÂ the latest stateÃÂ to legalize cannabis, following in the footsteps of its neighborÃÂ New Jersey.
Itâs the third time state legislators have tried toÃÂ legalize marijuana, though hang-ups over taxation, impaired driving, and social-equity provisions prevented earlier iterations from passing. Medical cannabis is already legal in New York.
Though New Yorkers aged 21 and over are now legally allowed to possess and smoke cannabis, adult-use cannabis sales wonât begin anytime soon.

New Yorkers over the age of 21 can now possess and use up to 3 ounces of cannabis in public under a legalization bill signed Wednesday by Gov. Andrew Cuomo, while sales of recreational-use marijuana won’t become legal for an estimated 18 months until the state draws up regulations.
