IDF Sub Crosses Suez Canal in Direct Warning to Iran; Knesset Set to Dissolve, 4th Election in 2 Years Imminent

Tensions between the Jewish state and Islamic Republic, while generally high, have risen significantly since the November 27 assassination of chief Iranian nuclear scientist Mohsen Fakhrizadeh. The targeted killing was largely attributed to Israel’s Mossad spy agency, prompting Tehran to threaten to retaliate. IDF chief Aviv Kochavi on Monday vowed that Jerusalem would respond “whether near or far” to any attack, emphasizing that, “if Iran and its partners, members of the radical axis, either directly or by proxy, take action against the State of Israel, they will find themselves in a very costly endeavor.” All of this, meanwhile, comes against the backdrop of the upcoming one-year anniversary (January 3) of the assassination in a US drone strike of former Iranian Quds Force commander Qasem Soleimani.

The news comes on the heels of the latest coronavirus statistics, in which Israel documented 2,821 new infections and a positive test ratio at 4.1%. The coronavirus cabinet is also preoccupied with the potential arrival of a virus mutation from abroad, notably from the UK. That particular strain is believed to be significantly more infectious, but not more fatal.
