In this unprecedented year, Delaware Online/The News Journal reporters continued bringing readers stories from the front lines of the COVID-19 pandemic, America s reckoning with race, and the presidential campaign and election of Joe Biden.
Across visual, investigative, editorial, and other categories, the work did not go unnoticed.
Delaware Online/The News Journal was recognized both within the Gannett company, as well as regionally with the MDDC Press Association, in a slew of awards across all mediums.
“The work honored represents just a fraction of the great journalism produced by the staff of Delaware Online and The News Journal in 2020,’’ said Mike Feeley, executive editor. “From the coronavirus pandemic, to the Biden campaign and victory celebrated in Wilmington, to the tornado that ripped through the state, the staff worked tirelessly to provide in-depth coverage of issues affecting Delawareans.
Wilmington has now seen 49 people shot, 11 fatally, so far this year. This is the most people shot and killed this early in the year since 2017 – the record year for shooting and killings in Delaware s largest city.
At this time in 2017, there were 70 people shot, 16 fatally. That year ended with 197 people shot, 32 fatally.
On Sunday, Maryland State Police was contacted shortly before 10 p.m. by Delaware authorities about a black Jeep Patriot heading toward the Maryland/Delaware state line. Maryland Police were told that the Jeep was stolen and was wanted in connection with multiple shootings in Wilmington over the weekend.
