block. endorsements generally don t mean much. what is the biden camp thinking they might get out of this or what might they get out of this. is john kerry potentially a different case here? you know, it s funny. conventional wisdom would dictate that endorsements like this might matter. that s the conventional wisdom of maybe 20 years ago. at this point john kerry who did very well in iowa he surprised people and i think he won iowa in 2004. he had a great close there. i assume there s good will for him there. john kerry is at this point a figure from a few cycles ago. i think what i guess theoretically what they might be thinking is that this could help solidify establishment support for joe biden. that s not really where a lot of the energy is in this race and certainly in iowa. i think in iowa where a lot of the progressive activists seem to be driving where this race
in terms of the apology and what we re seeing has happened is being accepted following the vice president in south carolina. reporter: yeah, richard. well, this two-day trip that the vice president is continuing here today is all about reinforcing what has been a strength for his campaign, and that is his depth of support with african-american voters. he started the morning at a church service. he s about to arrive here at a local restaurant where he s going to have lunch with some of his local endorsers who have endorsed his campaign. he really has strong establishment support in south carolina, especially among black leaders. and now what s interesting, richard, two weeks may seem like a lifetime in politics sometimes and it did feel like a lifetime for a lot of biden campaign advisers. advisers telling me yesterday, yes, in fact, they were a little bit on their heels over those comments a couple of weeks ago. but yesterday you saw him apologize. they say they re now on their front

pollsters only get surprised by the strength of insurgencies. it s never a surprise that the establishment candidate, no matter what year we re talking about, turns out to be stronger than we thought. that s never the thing they miss. well, prognostication is often based on poll numbers and stuff, but also you look for endorsements, you look for money, you look for the professionalism of the campaign, you look for ads. if you re prognosticating in an old school fashion, you add up all this stuff that tends to be a sort of oblique measurement of establishment support. and so when establishment candidates don t do well, it does usually blindside everybody. but i mean, this year with the kind of politics that we ve got right now actually in both the democratic and republican parties, i think prognostication is a very dangerous business to be in in general. well, it is as you mentioned, steve kornacki night in america. i know a lot of people think of
