Animal Shelter Sees Uptick in Parvovirus

While the COVID-19 pandemic has been changing the lives of the human population of the Espanola Valley, an outbreak of canine parvovirus has been observed at the Espanola Humane Society.     Mattie Allen, the director of Espanola Humane Society  said they’ve also not been able to hold their low cost vaccination clinics during the pandemic which they’ve seen lead to an increase of Parvo cases.     Canine parvovirus is a highly contagious disease that can be fatal to young dogs.     “Last month alone we had 20 puppies that we successfully treated for parvo,” Allen said. “Sometimes it’s none, Parvo similar to COVID has a 14 day incubation period. There are many months where we don’t have Parvo at all.”
