Karnataka: Plantation companies owe Rs 2000 cr in lease rentals to Govt, says Forest Minister Khandre

Several plantation companies, including Tata Coffee, owe approximately Rs 2000 crore in lease rentals and interest to the Karnataka government for forest land leased since pre-Independence. These firms, cultivating coffee, tea, rubber, and pepper across regions like Kodagu and Dakshina Kannada, face legal action for non-payment. Leases, awarded during British rule for minimal rentals, continued post-Independence. Despite rental increases in 1997, some firms challenged this in court, accruing decades of unpaid dues.

Felled 126 trees, smuggled logs : BJP MP s Pratap Simha s brother held in Karnataka

Vikram Simha, the brother of BJP MP from Mysuru-Kodagu Lok Sabha seat Pratap Simha, was arrested by the Forest Department on Saturday for his alleged involvement in a case wherein 126 scheduled trees protected under the Forest Act were felled without permission and their logs smuggled.
