On Tuesday, Premier Jason Kenney announced new measures to halt a surging third wave of COVID-19 infections that include closing outdoor patios, leaving bars and restaurants with the sole fallback of takeout and delivery for at least the next three weeks.
With the expected dramatic acceleration of vaccinations this month, “my hope is if people really get the message, this can be the short-term, last-time set of health restrictions and those businesses can get back hopefully to a decent summer,” Kenney said during a news conference Wednesday.

Citing illegal patios, health inspectors have ordered two Calgary-area eateries to shut down indoor dining and censured another.
Alberta Health Services officials say the configuration of the patios makes them indoor spaces, which aren’t allowed under COVID-19 public health rules.

But on Friday, some restaurant owners and managers said they’re too busy enforcing other health provisions and struggling to stay in business to worry about tougher policing of cohort groups.
“Asking my minimum-wage employees to survey tables and tell tables to stay within their households is nearly impossible,” said Calli, manager of the Pig and Duke Pub on 4th Street S.W. downtown, who chose not to give her last name.
