Olympics 2021: Why the Nové Město World Cup matters for America's Olympic MTB hopefuls

Already have an account? Competitors perform at UCI XCO in Albstadt, Germany on May 9th, 2021 // SI202105091358 // Usage for editorial use only // For the U.S. Olympic hopefuls in cross-country MTB racing, this weekend’s World Cup in Nové Město na Moravě, Czech Republic might be the most important race of the year. For both the men and women on the U.S. XC MTB long team, a top ride in Nové Město will punch their ticket to the Tokyo summer games. And there are multiple ways that each man or woman can qualify. Currently, Kate Courtney is the only American athlete with a confirmed slot for Tokyo, given her top-five finish at the 2019 world championships. As of now, the U.S. has two more slots for the women and just one for the men.

This weekend’s Swiss race is an important fine-tune for riders who are headed to Albstadt, Germany next week for the opening weekend of World Cup season. For some, like current World Cup champ Kate Courtney, the race in Leukerbad wraps up a month of training and racing in Europe. For other members of the U.S. Olympic long team, it’s a way to get their feet wet before Germany. For some riders, this weekend’s race in Leukerbad will serve as a 2021 debut of sorts. While she has done some smaller races near her home in Arizona, Chloe Woodruff crashed ahead of the U.S. Pro Cup events in Fayetteville, Arkansas and wasn’t able to compete. The U.S. national champ also sat out last year’s compressed European season.
