These Biofluorescent Mammals Emit A Vivid Pink And Red Glow

Biofluorescence refers to an organism's ability to absorb ultraviolet light (UV) and emit it as a colorful glow. The skill has been documented in fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and even the microscopic tardigrades. However, glow in the dark mammals are still new to science. They currently include just a handful of nocturnal animals such as flying squirrels, opossums, and platypuses. The latest to hop on to this elite list is a jumping rodent called the springhare.

One of two duck-billed platypus born in Melbourne s Healesville Sanctuary, Australia. (Reuters Picture Archive) The platypus is one of the strangest creatures on the planet. They have a duck-like bill, but also a beaver-like tail. They swim underwater, but they re covered in fur. Oh yeah and they re venomous like a snake! They re a bit of every animal. They have super sensitive bills (Mick Tsikas/Reuters) When platypuses sink into the water to eat, their senses of sight, smell and hearing turn off. Even their little ears tuck into a groove with their eyes. That s OK, because their bills are so sensitive that they can find their food by sensing sound waves, motion and the electric fields they generate.

In the scientific world right now, it s mammals time to shine  literally.  Researchers are building a growing (and glowing) list of fluorescent mammals, and a new addition, an endearing jumping rodent called the springhare, just leaped into the spotlight, its brown fur lighting up in swirling disco patterns of pink and orange under ultraviolet (UV) rays. Scientists recently detected springhares rosy glow in museum specimens and in live animals in captivity. They found springhares striking fluorescent colors to be funky and vivid, forming patterns that were highly diverse relative to biofluorescence found in other mammals, they wrote in a new study.

Scientists Find Springhares Glow Under Ultraviolet Light

Scientists Find Springhares Glow Under Ultraviolet Light Twitter 0 comments Finding out which animals do or do not glow under ultraviolet light (UV) has apparently become a pastime for scientists. In early 2020, for example, a research team reported that platypuses glow like blacklight posters. Now, members from that same team say they can also confirm that springhares large, tunneling rodents native to South Africa also exhibit biofluorescence under UV light. And make for a funky piece of nightclub art when they do. Gizmodo reported on the discovery, which participant scientists outlined in a study in Scientific Reports. The team of scientists, led by biologists Erik Olson and Paula Spaeth Anich at Northland College in Wisconsin, say in their study that while scientists have observed other animals glow under UV light, this is the first example of an Old World placental mammal doing so. (Old World, in this context, encompasses Asia, Africa, and Europe.)
