COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)
The annual Fire in the Sky celebration in Columbia will be held Sunday at 9:15 p.m. at the American Legion Park after being held at Cosmo-Bethel Park last year during the pandemic.
Erika Coffman, manager for Columbia Recreational Services, said planning the event was more difficult this year as there were many uncertainties around what the severity of the virus would be like come July 4. To play it safe we decided to shoot fireworks off from one of our parks similar to what we did last year and bring in other activities when we knew it was safe for us to do that, said Coffman.
Over 100 people participated. With the weather being so frigid the last few weeks, we slowly started to see our numbers climb when the weather started to warm up, recreation services manager for Columbia Parks and Recreation, Erika Coffman, said. Â
Coffman was in charge of the 7K race Saturday morning and said the temperature increase into the high 30s enticed people to run today. Â
Columbia residents Kimberly and Brad Earnest ran the Stonegrinder 7K for the first time this morning. Kimberly has been racing for 26 years. The Columbia Parks and Rec. just put on a great race. It s been fun to have something to train for to get you out in this cold weather, Kimberly said. Just keeps you motivated.  Â
