Petition urges reconsideration, independent investigation of Mike Polisky

Former cheerleader Erika Carter (SESP ‘18)  posted the petition, which had about 550 signatures as of Thursday night. The petition came after some community controversy around Polisky’s appointment due to his handling of complaints about harassment and discrimination.  In January, Weinberg senior Hayden Richardson filed a federal lawsuit that named Polisky as a defendant. The lawsuit alleged that Polisky did not allow Richardson to meet with former Athletic Director Jim Phillips about complaints regarding sexual exploitation of cheerleaders, and accused her of “fabricating evidence.” In a February Daily investigation, sources also claimed that Polisky did not adequately handle allegations of racial discrimination within the cheerleading program.

Northwestern Students, Faculty Protest Hiring of New Athletic Director

“Why is the university appointing him and approving his promotion at a moment when what we’re really asking for is instead step back and investigate what happened, said political science and religious studies professor Elizabeth Shakam Hurd. Give us the facts and then clear him and then promote him. Jennifer Pius, a current member of the university s cheer team, said she raised concerns about sexual misconduct and racism to Polisky and her coach in 2019. Mike Polisky is a danger to Northwestern Athletics, Pius said at Friday evening s protest. He knew about the abuses our teammates and I suffered and accused of lying to protect our coach.

Morton Schapiro defends promotion of Mike Polisky to athletic director

Following the Northwestern community’s requests for explanation, University President Morton Schapiro issued a Thursday statement defending Mike Polisky’s hire as the new athletic director. On Monday, the University announced it appointed Polisky, deputy athletic director for external affairs, to oversee the athletic department. Within days, six faculty members co-signed an open letter calling for an independent investigation into the appointment. On Thursday, former cheerleader Erika Carter (SESP ’18) published a petition which has since received over 550 signatures to reconsider the decision. Schapiro acknowledged the lawsuit by a member of the cheer team. In Weinberg senior Hayden Richardson’s federal lawsuit against the University and four staff members, Polisky was named a defendant. In it, she claimed Polisky accused her of fabricating evidence about sexual harassment. The University filed a motion to dismiss the complaint, the release stated.

February 4, 2021 Editor’s Note: Alyssa Johnson was a member of the Northwestern cheerleading program during the 2018-19 and 2019-20 seasons. She was contacted by the Office of Equity for their investigation on Pamela Bonnevier but did not participate. Content Warning: This article includes mentions of physical harassment, racial discrimination and mentions of sexual assault. Erika Carter (SESP ’18) never imagined she would sue her alma mater. As a Black member of Northwestern’s cheer program from 2016 to 2018, she faced unequal treatment for wearing her natural hair, was forced to split up from other Black teammates on the sidelines for “optics” and was told in writing that ethnically Black hairstyles like braids were not allowed on the team. Now in her post-graduation years, she said she plans to take legal action for the racial discrimination she experienced.
