In a letter addressed to its members, general counsel for the Minnesota Police and Peace Officers Association (MPPOA) Imran Ali offers “new guidance” from the Minnesota Board of Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST Board).
On July 26, a former Minneapolis police officer will report to the Hennepin County workhouse to serve nine months for the death of an innocent motorist during a high-speed chase. His sentencing raises questions about the consequences police officers can face in pursuits that go wrong, and who has the authority to hand down that discipline.
Standards board can now revoke the license of officers who violate its conduct guidelines, based on evidence presented in an administrative hearing regardless of whether the officer has been charged or convicted of a crime.
The POST board approved a draft of licensing guidelines for officers. One of the changes is a specific ban on licensing for individuals with ties to extremist groups.
