Incumbent Schember rolls in Erie s Democratic mayoral primary

Joe Schember’s re-election bid took a resounding step forward. The Democrat claimed his party’s nomination for Erie mayor in Tuesday’s municipal primary despite facing two Democratic challengers: businessman and Erie School Board member Tom Spagel and Sydney Zimmermann, a paid canvasser for the social justice organization Erie County United.  With no Republican on the ballot for the Nov. 2 municipal election, Schember, 70, is all but certain to win a second four-year term, barring a successful run from an independent, write-in or third-party candidate.  A former member of Erie City Council and retired PNC Bank vice-president, Schember was first elected in 2017.

Democrat Jasmine Flores: the race for Erie City Council

Two years ago, Jasmine Flores narrowly missed claiming an Erie City Council seat.  Flores finished fourth in the May 2019 Democratic City Council primary just behind Michael Keys, who went on to win a council seat that November. She s hoping for an even more successful run this time.  Flores, 28, is among eight Democrats and two Republicans in the City Council race.  Four of council s seven seats are on the ballot for the May 18 municipal primary. All seven council seats are currently held by Democrats. Along with fellow Democrats Elspeth Kate Koehle and Kendrick Tate, Flores is running as a slate connected to the citizen advocacy and social justice group Erie County United.

Democrat Liz Allen: the race for Erie City Council

Local governance, Allen has said in previous interviews, can be frustrating.  But the former Erie Times-News editor and reporter, who was first elected to City Council in 2017, ultimately decided to launch a re-election bid because she feels that city government has plenty of room to grow and improve, and she wants to be a part of that. There is much more to do, said Allen, 69, said in a February interview.  I want to continue to scrutinize the budget and ask the hard questions. Allen is among eight Democrats and two Republicans in the City Council race.  Four of City Council s seven seats are on the ballot in the May 18 municipal primary.

Republican Greg Brown: the race for Erie City Council

Greg Brown wants to revitalize small businesses in Erie, encourage new development citywide and look for ways to grow the city s tax base. As a member of Erie City Council, Brown, a Republican, vows to pursue all of those things, and more. We would create a sustainable economic boom (like) Erie has never seen, Brown said. Brown, 39, is among 10 candidates for City Council in the May 18 municipal primary.  There are eight Democrats and two Republicans in the race. Brown is the co-founder and chief operating officer of Erie s Red Letter Hospitality, a restaurant management group.  Four of City Council s seven seats are on the ballot.  Currently the panel is entirely made up of Democrats.
