18-year-old Chase Roger died in fatal Bethlehem Township house fire

Independent staff report BETHLEHEM TWP. The Stark County Coroner s Office has confirmed the identity of the victim of a fatal fire in February as 18-year-old Chase Rogers. Investigator Rick Walters said identification was confirmed by the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation through DNA. Rogers, who had a bedroom in the basement of the home, became trapped in the lower level when a fire broke out at his family s home at 10216 Erie Ave. SW at 1:28 a.m. Feb. 28, investigators said. Two adults escaped from the burning home and tried to rescue the victim but were turned back by the flames, officials said.

Holland native suing Holland Police Department over records bill HOLLAND A former Holland resident is suing the Holland Police Department to lower the cost of documents she requested.  Sarah Sterken Jackson, an attorney in New York, spent half of 2020 back home in Holland. During that time, she said she “learned of allegations that there were instances of HPD police officers acting in a racially biased manner,” according to the lawsuit complaint.  After hearing of these allegations, Jackson stated she began an “investigation” into whether there were police officers acting in a racially biased manner. In October 2020, Jackson filed a Freedom of Information Act request, asking the police department for “documents relating to policing and oversight,” including the following items: 

Township motorist dies following in crash with Perry Local Schools bus

PERRY TWP.  A township man died following a Tuesday morning crash with a Perry Local Schools bus. John Ickes, 73, was identified by the Stark County Coroner s Office as the motorist who died not long after the crash at an Aultman Hospital emergency room. Perry Police Chief Mike Pomesky said Ickes was heading north on Locke Avenue SW and collided with a Perry school bus around 7:35 a.m. while he was turning onto Lincoln Way E. At the time of the crash, Ickes was suffering from a medical episode, which is the apparent cause of his death, according to Rick Walters, the coroner s office chief investigator.
