Passaic NJ says American Rescue Plan will keep city finances solvent

PASSAIC Since March of 2020, the city has been stalked by twin terrors: falling revenues and increased spending. And 2021 might have been equally glum, but Passaic, like many of its sister cities, is receiving cash infusions from both the federal and state governments.  That means no tax hikes and no layoffs of public safety workers, namely police and firefighters. In presenting the 2021 budget to the City Council on Tuesday, officials said that a combination of federal CARES (Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act) grants and the expected money from the American Rescue Plan will keep the city solvent and, perhaps most important to the local property tax payer, mean a zero tax increase.

Here’s some of what the article said: Major American cities saw a 33% increase in homicides last year as a pandemic swept across the country, millions of people joined protests against racial injustice and police brutality, and the economy collapsed under the weight of the pandemic a crime surge that has continued into the first quarter of this year. Sixty-three of the 66 largest police jurisdictions saw increases in at least one category of violent crimes in 2020, which include homicide, rape, robbery, and aggravated assault, according to a report produced by the Major Cities Chiefs Association. Baltimore City, Baltimore County and Raleigh, North Carolina, did not report increases in any of the violent crime categories.
