cillig@altoonamirror.com PORTAGE While many of its teachers are already vaccinated, the Portage Area School District is taking the next step to mitigate the spread of COVID-19. Through the Chan Soon-Shiong Medical Center at Windber, the district is set to host a vaccine clinic April 22 for high school students, staff and community members. “We are really fortunate to provide this opportunity to our students and the community,” Superintendent Eric Zelanko said. “We want to take care of our people, and we don’t want to sit back and let the virus take over. If there’s a problem, we’re going to attack it. COVID is a problem, and we’re getting after it.”

Fox Two former Portage Area High School wrestling coaches have pleaded guilty to solicitation of child pornography and corruption of a minor charges, according to the state attorney general’s office. Pennsylvania Attorney General Josh Shapiro said Michael Anthony Fox of Cresson and Bradley Paul Rousell of Portage entered their pleas. The former coaches will be required to register under the SORNA, or Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act, for 15 years, have no contact with minors, and each face three years of probation. The two former coaches for the Portage Area High School wrestling team were accused of asking their athletes to bring in and share photos of their female classmates.

Portage Area set to pass out refurbished laptops to students [The Tribune-Democrat, Johnstown, Pa.] Jan. 28 PORTAGE When Portage Area School District shifted to remote learning last year, sophomore Bella Single started out using her own Chromebook because the district didn’t have computers to distribute. For Christmas, she received a new Hewlett-Packard computer. But now she’ll be among students receiving computers from her school, thanks to the arrival of refurbished devices. “I’m very excited for it,” the 16-year-old said, noting that the devices will have all of the school’s programs already loaded and ready. A shipment of refurbished laptops was delivered recently to Portage Area, and Superintendent Eric Zelanko said the devices will be distributed to students soon.
