Thieves using sticky paper meant to trap rodents have been snagging checks from U.S. mail collection boxes in several Connecticut towns, a lucrative catch that has wiped out victims’ bank accounts.
Some Connecticut towns have put out a warning for people who may be mailing checks. West Hartford, Coventry and Simsbury police departments said they have seen.
The West Hartford Police Department is warning the public about thieves operating a new scam known as “check washing, ”where the thieves use chemicals to remove ink from checks, then write in higher amounts and different recipients of the funds.
