Valpolicella & Soave: The Times, They Are A Changin’
BY ERIC GUIDO | FEBRUARY 25, 2021
It’s amazing to consider how much the world has changed in such a short period of time. Suddenly we are all focused on the importance of other people and our relationships with them. Instead of firing off a text or email, we now pick up the phone to hear a human voice on the other side; and with each conversation, we all speak enthusiastically about the days we had face-to-face meetings, tastings, dinners or just a friendly conversation. This train of thought was emphasized during my recent tastings, as numerous wineries sent in samples and offered to taste together over Zoom. I truly believe it is one of many signs, once we can regain some sense of normalcy, that the world has changed for the better in some ways.
The Power of Three: New Vintage Rosso di Montalcino
BY ERIC GUIDO | JANUARY 12, 2021
The Plot
Wouldn’t you know it, like most things in Italy where nothing is really ever cut and dry, a request to sample Rosso di Montalcino flooded my house with wines from three very different vintages. At first, I found this challenging, because my initial intention was to do a report with all 2019s. However, I then realized that this instead provided an opportunity to taste a broad range of new wines, all currently in the market or just entering it, and to gain a better understanding of the next three vintages of Brunello.
2020: The Year in Review
BY ANTONIO GALLONI | DECEMBER 30, 2020
My Year in Review article is usually a greatest hits of the past twelve months, a write up of fabulous meals, wines and tastings. Obviously, there was not much of that this year. I almost did not write this article at all, but 2020 has its own vibe and story. Ultimately, I thought that should be documented…
State of the Union
We were fortunate to have a fulfilling year at Vinous despite numerous challenges created by COVID-19. Thank you for giving us the opportunity to do what we do. Early on in the pandemic we decided to do everything possible to maintain our typical publishing schedule. That required an extraordinary effort by our critics, who worked around the clock. Homes became warehouses as we received a seemingly endless barrage of samples from all over the world. Just dealing with the opening of boxes and preparing the trash/recycling was (and continues to be) a monumental effort. We were able to publis
Italy’s Sparkling Advantage: Prosecco and Franciacorta
BY ERIC GUIDO | DECEMBER 15, 2020
The holidays are upon us. It’s the season where more bubbly is purchased and consumed than at any other time of the year. Whether it’s for gifting, celebrating or the perfect pairing at your holiday meal, a bottle of bubbly always fits the bill. The funny part is that, when the average consumer walks into a retail store at this time of year, the word Champagne is usually the first thing to part from their lips. However, and I can tell you this from personal experience, once they learn that the average entry-level Champagne sells for $40 or more, the next word from their lips is Prosecco! I say Bravo to that, as long as the Prosecco you’re buying is through an informed decision and worth the tariff - but that’s a big part of the reason why you’re here reading this, isn’t it? But let’s just say that you’re really looking for that Champagne-like experience without settling for t
