Republicans Want to Reshape US Election Laws After Record 2020 Turnout
CHICAGO – Months after record-high U.S. voter turnout propelled Democrats to victory in the 2020 elections, giving them control of the White House and both houses of Congress, Republicans are attempting to reshape election laws in state legislatures across the nation.
In state after state, Republicans seek to limit opportunities for early and absentee balloting that Americans flocked to last year Democratic voters in particular.
In America’s heartland, Iowa is among the first examples of the trend.
More than 2 million Iowans were registered to vote in the 2020 general election, a record in a state with a population of just over 3.1 million.

Iowa House sends governor election law changes
Republicans in the legislature are sending the governor a bill to change absentee voting rules and set an early voting period for elections that’s nine days shorter.
Representative Bobby Kaufmann, a Republican from Wilton, began debate on the bill by saying Iowa’s 2020 election was successful and voter fraud was not an issue in the state.
“It is my view that government should be run like a business,” Kaufmann said. “What do you do when you have a very successful year in business? Do you put it on auto pilot, walk away and hope it replicates itself? No.”
