Hamilton s police service needs to be innovative and make sure it s justifying every dollar that s spent on it.
That was the message on Friday from Frank Bergen who, in a short ceremony, became the city s new chief of police.
Bergen, who s been Hamilton s deputy chief since 2018, acknowledged that there s increased budget scrutiny on the Hamilton Police Service (HPS), and it needs to embrace partnerships to be more community focused. We can create a model that will place communities at its core, said Bergen during a scaled-down ceremony attended by his wife and Mayor Fred Eisenberger. Eisenberger also chairs the police services board.

The Hamilton Police Services board has launched a confidential survey it says will allow residents a chance to vote on a new police chief.
This comes as current chief Eric Girt is retiring in late February.
While the board has started the process of selecting a new chief, it has brought on consulting firm Odgers Berndtson to help.

Jaimi Bannon is starting her term as the first sworn female officer to lead the Hamilton Police Association, and is the only woman to currently lead a police association in Ontario.

Jaimi Bannon, the new president of the Hamilton Police Association (HPA), says the union is ready for a fresh start. Bannon is the first sworn woman officer to lead the union, and the only one currently leading a police association in Ontario.

Hamilton s police chief, Eric Girt, is retiring.
Girt said during a police services board meeting Thursday that he ll retire effective Feb. 7, 2021 from his post at the helm of the Hamilton Police Service (HPS). It has been an honour to serve with you, Girt said, thanking Hamilton police officers and civilian staff.
His priorities, he said, have been to have a respectful, compassionate police service.
Mayor Fred Eisenberger, who is also board chair, lauded Girt for his work, particularly with youth. He also said Girt played an integral role in security during the 2015 Pan Am Games.
