Report: Wind, solar energy cheaper than most Wisconsin coal plants

CHRIS HUBBUCH Only two of Wisconsin’s remaining coal-fired power plants can still compete with new wind and solar generators on price, according to a new study. And even those plants are “on the cusp.” The report from Energy Innovation found nearly three quarters of all U.S. coal plants were either uneconomical compared to nearby wind and solar or were already slated for retirement. The EPA is proposing to phase out the production and use of hydrofluorocarbons. Those gases are commonly used in refrigerators and air conditioners and are considered a major driver of global warming. The proposed rule follows through on a law Congress passed back in December. It would decrease U.S. production and use of the gases by 85% over the next 15 years. The phaseout reportedly has support both from environmental groups and within the manufacturing industry.Additional reporting by The Associated Press.

Replacing Coal Plants With Renewables Is Cheaper 80% of the Time - Governors Wind Energy Coalition

Governors Wind Energy Coalition Replacing Coal Plants With Renewables Is Cheaper 80% of the Time Source: By Leslie Kaufman, Bloomberg • Posted: Wednesday, May 5, 2021 A new report shows that the economics may not even support running U.S. coal plants, let alone building them. About 80% of U.S. coal plants are now more expensive to keep running than to swap out for new wind and solar capacity, according to a report from Energy Innovation, a non-partisan climate and energy think tank. While renewables cost more than fossil energy for much of the last century, prices for new wind and solar have dropped so quickly in recent years that they were already cheaper than new coal. This report shows that the price differential holds true for a growing amount of existing coal, as well. “This is becoming true for more and more plants moving forward and at an accelerating pace,” said Eric Gimon, a senior fellow with Energy Innovation and a co-author of the repo

One of the Country’s 10 Largest Coal Plants Just Got a Retirement Date. What About the Rest? The largest coal-fired power plants keep on going, even as many smaller ones close. On April 22, American Electric Power announced that it would close the Rockport Plant in southwest Indiana by 2028, making the plant the only one of the 10 largest in the country that is scheduled to completely shut down before 2030.
