If the government has its way, millions of american drivers will be taking their cars and light trucks into the shop to fix a defect that could kill them. Late today, the Transportation Department called for the expansion of what has been a limited, regional recall of vehicles whose front driverside airbags were made by japans takata corporation. The government now wants a nationwide recall with the expansion including vehicles manufactured by ford, honda, chrysler, mazda, and b. M. W. That could bring the number of recalled vehicles to more than 20 million. Jeff glor is following the investigation and has the details. Reporter the defective takata airbags have already been link to at least five deaths and more than 100 injuries. Earlier a man was hit and killed at naples and rolph streets in the Crocker Amazon neighborhood. New details tonight about another new years eve accident in fremont where a young mother was killed while crossing the street with her baby. Police have identified her as 19yearold ashley capuchin. Her baby has lifethreatening injuries. Police say she was in an argument. Just before 10 00, the two girls got out of the car and walked across paseo padre parkway with the baby.
