BILOXI, Miss. (WLOX) - The three-month old child who police say was kidnapped by his father in Louisiana has died after a police shootout on Monday.
Harrison County Coroner Brian Switzer told WLOX the three-month old infant died at 1:30 a.m. Tuesday at a Mobile hospital. The infant has been identified as La’Mello Parker, a boy who was born Jan. 23, 2021.
The father, Eric Derell Smith, 30, was struck and killed by multiple gunshots. The infant, La’Mello Parker, was struck once and killed, but the local coroner's office did not immediately confirm whether the baby was shot by the police or by the father. BILOXI, Miss. (WLOX) - A three-month old baby shot Monday during a shootout between police and the infantâs father died due to a gunshot, said authorities on Wednesday.
The infant, who has been identified as LaâMello Parker, died from a single gunshot wound, said Harrison County Coroner Brian Switzer.
The coroner did not state if the autopsy was able to determine whether that shot was made at close range or not. That information, he said, will be included in the autopsy report, which will be sent to investigators and the district attorneyâs office.
Louisiana man dead following police chase in Mississippi
A police chase ensued into Mississippi and ended in Harrison County this afternoon.

Harrison County Coroner Brian Switzer tells WXXV the suspect is dead. The four-month-old was taken to Merit Health in Biloxi.
The suspect was identified by Louisiana authorities as 30-year-old Eric Derell Smith.
East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office BRSO responded to a 911 hang up call at approximately 11:30 this morning in the 2000 block of Richmond Street in Baker.
When deputies arrived on scene, they found that two individuals were shot.
The suspect, Eric Derell Smith reportedly fled in a blue Nissan Altima with dark tinted windows. Smith reportedly had a 4-month-old child with him in the vehicle.
