election cycle no natter what you do you start taking them for granted and what you re saying now is the ellison effect that the group of voters say we are going to lose, let s lose being at the front of the line and if we put progressive issues we can win for the future. the main political reporter down here noted something that s unusual, we haven t seen in in a long time in politics, first of all, the democratic chairperson election is an election, it s not a coronation, if you will, and on top of that, you ve got the factions, hey, if my guy doesn t win, i m walking, what does that say about how divided the democrats are right now? the same thing that the the democrats went through 2010. they eventually four people like eric canter, forced people like john boehner out of office because the more conservatives won. you re not necessarily
put yourself back in my shoes. you re a teenager and you win $5,000 and you re only miles from tee juan a. what would you do? he married his high school sweetheart judy, and together they have two children. his rise to politics was swift. in 2002 he served on the assembly. when he was in the legislature for four years, he actually became minority leader as a freshman. that s pretty remarkable, and it tells you that he has some organizational skills and is able to get along with a wide variety of people. after his four years in the state legislature, his old boss, congressman bill thomas, decided to retire. so mccarthy ran for his job and won. mccarthy rose quickly in the ranks. in 2010 he co-authored a book called young guns, a new generation of conservative leaders with eric canter and paul ryan.
a year later, he was voted in as house majority whip. in 2014 after conservatives rose up to deliver eric canter a stunning loss in prit marry election, mccarthy became the first election and the youngest person ever to become house majority leader. the great advantage he has over speaker boehner is the lack of scar tissue. in a sense, his being in the house only nine years is a plus. the absence of leadership over the past six years has had horrific consequences all across the globe, and it s only getting worse. the republican caucus in the house has made it pretty clear that they want a more aggressive posture told the president. there is no question there at all. he is much less likely to negotiate with the obama white house, and he there s nothing
eric canter had been playing that role. he had come to these commemorations before. they forgot he s not there. with everything that s going on he said he ll go in the future. this is the big 50th commemoration. this would have put a lot of this to rest if he d ehave gone. i think it should be a bipartisan issue i think. and the question too, is when these buses leave, when the commemoration ends, there is still, you know attempts being made mostly bean democrats, and some republicans, to patch up the voting rights act they need to. republicans should take the lead on this. we were there in crafting the voting rights act back in the 60s. we were part of that narrative. we should be a part of it now. there s no interest in the party or base of the party for this. i don t see
