BAKERSFIELD, Calif. â A local nonprofit along with city and county leaders teamed up to help educate areas of the community who have been hit the hardest by COVID and hopefully inspire them to get vaccinated.
The MLK Community Initiative, along with 5th District Supervisor Leticia Perez, Bakersfield City Councilman Eric Arias, and the United Against COVID Coalition held a vaccine canvassing event at the People s Missionary Baptist Church in southeast Bakersfield.
It was a night of hellos and goodbyes at the Bakersfield City Council meeting on Wednesday.
Longtime Councilwoman Jacquie Sullivan participated in her last votes after 25 years of service. She left, along with seven-year veteran Willie Rivera, who resigned from his seat before his term was up to focus on a new job with Aera Energy.
In their places will be two new faces. New Ward 1 Councilman Eric Arias was sworn in, along with returning incumbents Andrae Gonzales and Bruce Freemen. Ward 6 Councilwoman Patty Gray, who is replacing Sullivan, missed the meeting due to an illness and will be sworn in at a later date.

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KERO) â The Bakersfield City Council ends one chapter and begins the other, as two members step down from their seats, and two members are sworn in.
Wednesday night, Jackie Sullivan and Willie Rivera both leaving their wards, both making history in the aspect that Sullivan served the longest of any council member and Rivera joined as the youngest less than a decade ago.
2013, that s the year Willie Rivera became the youngest elected city council member in Bakersfield history, and now, seven years later, Rivera is moving on but not before reflecting on his time.
