ABCNews The search for a missing 20-year-old Navy sailor who authorities believe fell overboard while on the USS Theodore Roosevelt aircraft carrier off the coast of Southern California has been called off, officials said.
The search for Ethan Goolsby, an aviation ordnanceman airman apprentice from San Antonio, Texas, ended Saturday evening after Navy officials said search and rescue crews spent more than 55 hours scouring 607 square nautical miles of the Pacific Ocean without finding a sign of the sailor.
The Navy declared Goolsby deceased. The loss of our sailor is felt deeply by all on board, Capt. Eric Anduze, commanding officer of USS Theodore Roosevelt, said in a statement. The entire Theodore Roosevelt team sends our deepest condolences to the family of our missing shipmate.

He was identified as 20-year-old Aviation Ordnanceman Airman Apprentice Ethan Garrett Goolsby of Texas, according to the Navy. His family was notified before the search stopped.
Search and rescue efforts began around 7:30 a.m. Thursday, when a lookout aboard the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier spotted what appeared to be a person in the water, according to Navy officials.
Search efforts from the San Diego-based carrier and five other vessels concluded at sunset on Saturday. Navy crews and the U.S. Coast Guard searched more than 607 square nautical miles for more than 55 hours off the coast of Southern California.

The search for Aviation Ordnanceman Airman Apprentice Ethan Goolsby, 20, who served aboard the aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt, was suspended Saturday night. It began Thursday after a lookout spotted what appeared to be a person in the water.
His father, Kelly Goolsby, issued a statement Sunday evening.
“We are grateful for the search and recovery efforts related to us by the U.S. Navy,” he said. “We remain hopeful that they will continue to search for our only son’s remains.
