Gas from the Gulf of Thailand is mostly supplied from Erawan and Bongkot gas fields and is key for national power generation. The Department of Mineral Fuels (DMF) is accelerating the process to have PTT Exploration and Production (PTTEP) succeed US-based Chevron Corp to operate the Erawan Gas Block in the Gulf of Thailand amid concerns that DMF s legal conflict with the US company will affect national power generation. Known as G1/61, Erawan is operated by Chevron, but its concession expires in April next year. PTTEP, which won the auction for the G1/61 concession in December 2018, will be a new operator from 2022.
