All wars are different. All wars are the same. The equipment changes to be sure. The Roman Legionnaire was armed with a gladius and pilum, the Revolutionary War patriot carried his musket, the World War II grunt had an M1 rifle or BAR, while today’s soldier may be issued a M240 machine gun. One thing is the same, however, the brunt of the battle is borne by the infantry, the Queen of Battle. That soldier may have been a professional, such as the later Roman Legion. He may have been a draftee, such as the medieval fyrd or the bulk of the American Army during the Vietnam war era, or he may have been a volunteer such has staffed the military since the draft ended in 1973. One such volunteer is Waynesville native Brandon Davis.
