Equality Minister says a Yes vote to remove reference women in the home in the upcoming referendum would recognise care in the Constitution and impact Government decisions
The chief executive of the State’s human rights watchdog held talks with a number of Social Democrats TDs before announcing last Friday she would resign and seek a nomination to run for the party in June’s European elections.
Supposedly our upcoming referendum will achieve a greater gender balance but will do no such thing. Instead, it’s another slap in the face for Irish women.
I was going to postpone writing about the referendums until closer to polling day, but I see Equality Minister Roderic O’Gorman is panicking early. I don’t blame him. Rather than simply delete the anachronistic “woman in the home” clause from the constitution, the Government has attempted something broader. Its effort has been greeted with indifference, irritation and, since there are two “family”-based referendums on March 8, confusion.
