Scholarship of Teaching and Learning using student evaluations by Ameera Ali, Joseph Crawford et al

In this Editorial, we stay committed to the objective of the Journal of University Teaching and Learning Practice regarding sharing, evaluating, and developing stronger evidence-based practice papers by focusing on the topic of national and institutional student evaluations. We create an important theoretical and practical foundation for authors considering publishing with our Journal on studies that utilise student surveys as their primary method of data collection. The editorial begins by providing a comprehensive overview of the history and emergence of student evaluations dating back to medieval times, we trace the evolution of student evaluations to present day looking at the rationale behind the induction of such tools. Following this, we discuss the validity of student evaluations through an exploration of factors such as student satisfaction, the timing of when student surveys are administered, and the idiosyncrasies regarding paper-based and online evaluations. We then further

SoTL in the margins: Teaching-focused role case studies by Nicola Simmons, Michelle J Eady et al

Abstract The number of teaching-focused faculty (TFF) continues to increase, raising concerns about opportunities to engage in the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) for academics who are hired to focus on teaching rather than research. Various names for these teaching-focused positions include, but are not limited to: Instructional, limited-term faculty; permanent, but not eligible for tenure; equivalent to tenure-track (eligible for tenure); and casual teaching-focused. Regardless of title, TFF face a unique challenge: Hired for excellence in teaching and committed to improving teaching and learning, they are often not granted support to engage in professional development or research related to teaching and learning. These and other challenges are associated with their academically marginalized positions. The authors are members of the Advocacy Committee of the International Society for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (ISSOTL). This paper builds on a session we o

RNA editing affects gene expression -- with disease implications

March 10, 2021 Researchers found that RNA editing events can have large downstream effects that influence gene expression and subsequent phenotypic manifestations of that expression. RNA editing may be a previously underappreciated mechanism driving human diseases, according to an analysis published in RNA editing is a cellular process in which the sequence in mature RNA molecules is enzymatically altered from the genomic sequence. Altered levels of RNA editing have been associated with cancers and various other neurological conditions. The most common RNA editing event in animals is adenosine (A) to an inosine (I) RNA editing, in which adenosines are deaminated to inosines. This A-to-I RNA editing is mediated by members of the adenosine deaminase acting on RNA (ADAR) family.
