The origin of the mysterious monkey puzzle tree that was donated by Friends of Elizabeth Park to the Environmental Sciences Magnet School at Mary Hooker in Hartford was actually not a mystery at all. The tree, it turns out, is actually a bunya bunya pine, often referred to as a fake monkey pine tree.
When the Monkey Puzzle Tree at Elizabeth Park needed to move, they reached out Charmaine Craig, Hartford’s “Tree Lady,” to help solve the puzzle. Now at its new home at Environmental Sciences Magnet School at Mary Hooker, students have the opportunity to learn about this endangered tree, its history and its purpose.
