Leominster Champion
A section of Route 2 in Leominster will be closed to vehicles later this week so construction of a walking trail between downtown Leominster and downtown Fitchburg can move ahead.
Route 2 between Exit 99 (Route 12, old Exit 31) and Exit 100 (Route 13, old Exit 32) will be off limits to traffic from 10 p.m. Friday, July 23 to 6 a.m. Saturday, July 24 so a new pedestrian bridge for the Twin Cities Rail Trail can be installed.
The bridge is being assembled off-site and will be lowered into place. The concrete for the bridge deck (where people will walk) will be poured at a later date, according to Ryan Davison, resident engineer at the state Department of Transportation. That will necessitate one more shutdown of Route 2, Davison stated in an email to Leominster public safety officials.
