this is decision day in iowa. just four hours from now, republicans will gather in caucuses across the state and cast the first votes in the 2012 campaign. the candidates have spent months of the trial paving the way with millions in campaign cash. much of that money has gone towards a barrage of negative advertising. now, in a final flurry of appearances, the rhetoric has reached a new peak or maybe a new low. you said mitt romney, somebody who will lie to you to get to be president will lie to you when they are president. i have to ask you, are you calling mitt romney a liar? yes. you re calling mitt romney a liar? you seem shocked by it. yes. why are you saying he s a liar? this is a man who s staff created the pack. his millionaire friends fund the pack. he pretends he has nothing to do with the pack. it s balogna. it s like his pretense that he s a conservative. wow. let s go live to our chief political correspondent, candy crowley. she s in des moines. you
right. this isn t like going into a voting booth and just pulling a lever. you go somewhere and people talk to you about their candidates. if you re open-minded and you have a second choice and that second choice might be rick santorum, this could be really good for you. let aels talk about mitt romney. i ll never forget when you said this, a month or two ago, he s the guy who your parents want you to date, like the echbtd line, you don t but in the end he s really the nicest guy. looks better after you start dating around. suddenly the guy looks better. how is he looking in iowa? he may be looking a little better. i think one key as we sort of look at those entrance polls on election night is going to be the question of electability. it will be interesting to see whether voters say, i voted for this person because he or she agrees with me on my values, cares about what i care about, or, i voted for this person because this person actually has the opportunity to win. and do
it. carol, talk a little bit about the role of the evangelical voters in the caucuses. always very important. are they playing as important a role? are they likely to turn out in as great numbers this year as they did in 2008? i think that s one of the great questions that we re all waiting to see. it s been said that 60% of evangelicals, 60% of caucusgoers in 2008 identified themselves as evangelicals as they went into entrance polls. i ve always wondered about that figure. our steadies show a steady third to 45% identify as evangelicals. they are a very important block in the iowa caucuses, but they ve been very split this time. there s a number of strong social conservative candidates, they liked michele bachmann, they liked rick perry. newt gingrich even made a play as well for this block. but they ve just been splintered. our polling did show, even in
girls. at last word, bochblg children are listed in fair condition. watch this. welcome back a. hour two, i m brooke baldwin. got to talk about iowa ushgs, one day left. also, the president signs a defense bill despite his and i m quoting serious reservations. and iran tests a missile. starting with joe johns on the ground in iowa, i know you have been with the romney camp today. here we are one day left, what s mitt romney up to? reporter: well, he s moving across the state at a very fast clip, brooke. he as also playing it very safe. couple of events today, didn t take questions, made some jokes. pretty much stayed to his stump speech. that s what he s been doing for the past two or three days. it s pretty clear that the romney camp is happy where they are, what they re saying is they don t expect to win, they re not predicting a win. nonetheless, they would very much like to win and i think they re running strong in the polls. so it s a challenge for him to make hi
