for antebellum. take a listen and we ll talk about it. when we look at southerners and how they tried to twist the narrative of what happens, i want us to put ourselves in their shoes and look at why. if you can teach empathy when it comes to history, it s touch a powerful thing for the rest of your lives. i m sorry. teach empathy for who? to the enslavers? because i clearly, maybe i misheard. i m sure he was not suggesting we empathize with the oppressor. but that s so much a part of the problem is again the refusal. refusal to look at black humanity in the face. the incredible amount of violence that took place in the institution of slavery. because when we look at the institution of slavery and how violent it was, how harmful it was, we have to own that and again, our inability to own that history, to talk about that history honestly. you know, authentically.

and when you and i have talked. this is our fourth interview. but one thing you said in i think our first interview, how things have morphed. that lynching morphed into mass incarceration. that the lynchings went from the courthouse steps into the courthouse. that s right. that s right. i don t think people understand that the real evil of american slavery, it wasn t just the involuntary servitude and the forced labor. it was the narrative that was created by enslavers to justify enslavement. the narrative is black people are not the same as white people. they re less human, less capable, less worthy. the tragedy of that kind of narrative is we never addressed it. when the civil war ends, the north wins the civil war, but the south wins the narrative war. and the idea of racial hierarchy persists after the 13th amendment which talks about
it was on the ships of enslavers, and so there needs to be a global debate. african-americans should not just focus on sort of reparations solely for the descendants of the enslaved people in america. certainly there s an american component, but there a british component. there is a french component. we can t understand the current economies of the caribbean. we can t understand the current economies and the political situations on the continent of africa or even for us as african-americans without putting it into a global context as it connects to the transatlantic slave trade. very good point, and i mean, look, we could talk about this all day. henry because this is originating as a fight between jamaica and the uk, this is not the first time this reparations came about, you talked about david cameron s response at the time, very consistent with other uk leaders, but i do feel like there is a shift in the conversation happening right now. you mentioned george floyd and the english
