Kirkwood's gnome man plans to walk 380 miles to a Type 1 diabetes camp; here's why | Local News

One hundred years ago, everything about Richard Humphreys’ plan would be impossible.  One hundred years ago, a man like 78-year-old Humphreys probably wouldn’t have lived as long as he has.  But a century after insulin was first introduced as a medical treatment, this Kirkwood man who has been living with Type 1 diabetes for 64 years is planning to walk 380 miles, from Pennsylvania to Ohio.  On May 16, Humphreys will strap on his pack with his tent and supplies, pick up his handmade rattlesnake-skin walking stick – a gift from his friend Dale Kirkpatrick – and begin his journey.  He’ll depart his home, which abuts his Gnome Countryside nature trail, a creation that has provided education and inspiration for thousands. His destination is Camp Ho Mita Koda – the world’s oldest operating summer camp for children with Type 1 diabetes – in Newbury Township, Ohio, about 30 miles east of Cleveland.

Happy about horse decision (letter)

I’m happy to report after months — if not years — of going back and forth about over a Providence Township proposed ordinance to allow horses on the pristine Providence Township section of the Enola Low Grade Trail, the township commissioners voted 2-1 to not allow any horse activity — no exemptions. I want to thank all the residents and friends of Providence Township for helping this happen. As I have written before, this move will continue to make our trail safe and enjoyable for generations. So come out and enjoy the trail — you’ve earned it. Frank Voynar

Hiking trail gaps prioritized in new Pennsylvania trail plan

Hiking trail gaps prioritized in new Pennsylvania trail plan Updated Mar 16, 2021; Posted Mar 16, 2021 The Delaware & Hudson Trail in northeastern Pennsylvania has been named Pennsylvania Trail of the Year by the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources. Facebook Share Closing gaps in trails remains a top priority in the Land and Water Trail Network Strategic Plan 2020-2024 released today by the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources. Identifying and closing trail gaps has been a priority for over 10 years and was included in DCNR’s previous 4-year trail plan. That need has been reinforced by recent surveys and interest from specialized trail users, such as OHV riders, mountain bikers, equestrians and water trail users.
