Senate lawmakers debated concurrence on House amendments to Engrossed Substitute Senate Bill 5370, updating the mental health advance directive laws for the state. Senators concurred with the state House Representatives, 46-2, moving the bill to the Governor’s office, for an opportunity to be signed into law. Senators also concurred with the House amendments to Engrossed Substitute Senate Bill 5229, concerning health equity continuing education for health care professionals, by a vote of 33-15, sending the legislation to the Governor’s office for an opportunity to be signed into law.

My Edmonds News presents The Daily Legislative Report, covering the 2021 Washington State Legislature. House lawmakers debated Engrossed Substitute Senate Bill 5044, which would provide professional learning, equity, cultural competency and dismantling institutional racism in the public school system. The bill passed the Senate on Jan. 27 by a vote of 30-19, and passed the House 57-40. The bill will be negotiated between both chambers on amendments, and if passed, will go to the Governor’s office for an opportunity to be signed into law.

My Edmonds News presents The Daily Legislative Report, covering the 2021 Washington State Legislature. House lawmakers debated Engrossed Substitute Senate Bill 5263, concerning defenses in personal injury and wrongful death actions. Under the legislation, police officers that shoot people committing a felony can be sued by the estate of the felony committer unless they can provide beyond a reasonable doubt that the crime was actually a felony at the time of the death.The bill passed the Senate 28-20 on March 5, passing the House 56-42 on April 8, and will now go to the Governor’s office, for an opportunity to be signed into law.
House, Senate pass set of bills to improve unemployment system

UPDATE: A fourth unemployment-related bill has now passed the House and Senate as of Wednesday. Substitute House Bill 1455 stops the Employment Security Department and the Department of Labor and Industries from using people’s full social security numbers in correspondence with non-governmental third parties, except in financial transactions, encrypted messages, or cases where the full number is required by law. Legislators said the goal of the bill was to prevent fraud attacks like the one at Employment Security last year.
Three bills to help the state’s unemployment system have now passed both chambers in the Legislature.
