Welcome to the 2019 mississippi book festival. This morning we celebrate the fifth anniversary of her literary long party. [applause] we are honored to have so many distinguished authors and friends join our celebration from the Mississippi State capital. Today more than 170 authors will visit with thousands of booklovers making connections through the love of books and the written word. Cspan has been with us since the very beginning and we are grateful for the partnership we start today by recognizing the readers to mississippi culturally a landscape. The writers trail is an ever list the places all over the state that mark significant places in the lives of mississippi authors. Ida b wells and richard ford are the very best writers. Two is famous for Investigative Journalism. And ford is famous for his novels. Understanding in the modern period in reconstruction, and we have two speakers this morning. We have Vernon Burton whos from clemson university, and we have Brooke Thomas who is from the university of california at irvine. Both of them are stunningly important scholars in this world. Vernon burton is the judge matthew j. Perry distinguished chair of history and a professor of pan african studying, sociology and anthology and Computer Science at clemson university, which is to say hes mostly the entire university at this point. His i could read all of his distinguished awards and honors, and then he wouldnt have time to talk. I can only say that he has written a number of very important books. He has given major lectures at many institutions, most recently the annual lecture in southern history at the university of arkansas, and he his books have been in the book of the month club, the history book club, and other clubs. I think you can tell it is important to bring as many school kids as possible to come see that incredible exhibit. William height stat with me and announced the School District and the Constitution Center are launching a program to bring tens of thousands of philly School Districts to the constitution School District every year. Wow. Were calling it the constitutional ambassadors program. Were going to go seek support, and those great kids are going to start these experiences in their class, come see the civil war exhibit and the Constitution Center and connect to classrooms around the country using our virtual constitutional exchanges for our long conversations about the constitution, moderated by a judge or a master teacher.
