Calhoun Avenue plan panned during Assembly committee hearing

Juneau, Alaska (KINY) - Members of the public pushed back on a recommendation from City Hall to reject Planning Commission recommendations on the proposed Calhoun Avenue reconstruction project during an Assembly Public Works and Facilities Committee meeting Monday. The Planning Commission recommended that the Assembly deny the project as designed and that a full traffic study be conducted prior to reconstruction. City Hall also wants the idea of turning the byway into a one-way street removed from further consideration or study and that the reconstruction proposal be sent back to the commission for review. Public Works and Engineering Director Katie Koester argued for proceeding as planned.   She said a one way in the future is not precluded by doing the needed improvements now.  The recommendation from staff is to proceed with this project and we don t recommend a study at this time because it would be very expensive.  It s going to hundreds of thousands of dolla
