The Marion County Road Department has remained busy the last few weeks with cleanup of recent snow events. A key challenge, according to Engineer Tyler Christian, is operating equipment in the extreme cold. He says that processes may slow down a bit during these periods, as his operators must operate with even more caution during extreme cold.
“The hydraulics don’t work as well on the equipment, you have to be extra careful when plowing because the plastic, metal, rubber, everything on your truck, plow and motor grader is more brittle and subject to breaking. We have to take things slower and be more cautious. Hopefully we don’t have to do a whole lot this weekend, we were still cleaning up earlier this week, widening out some of the gravel roads after the drifting last week. Right now, we’re in the shop making repairs, and trying to keep everything in the heat at the moment.”
