Repairs to Interstate 70 Near West Virginia Welcome Center in Ohio County Expected To Wrap Up in April | News, Sports, Jobs

Staff Writer Photo by Scott McCloskey Traffic continues to be narrowed to one lane in both directions on a section of Interstate 70 Friday near the West Virginia Welcome Center in Ohio County as a longwall mining operation passes deep below the surface. Motorists now driving through one-lane sections of Interstate 70 near the West Virginia Welcome Center in Ohio County won’t have much longer to deal with that. Road resurfacing repairs due to longwall mining in the area should be finished by early April, according to the West Virginia Division of Highways. WVDOH Area Engineer Mike Witherow said the DOH will perform some surveying work prior to a local contractor repairing the highway, as another longwall coal panel has passed deep below the surface in that area.

Staff Writer Beginning Monday, I-70 East will be closed from U.S. 250/W.Va. 2 South - 16th Street Exit (Exit 1B) to the Oglebay Park Exit (Exit 2A) in order for Swank Construction to begin phase two of the Fulton Bridge Replacement as part of the I-70 Bridges Project. (Photo by Scott McCloskey) WHEELING Motorists from Ohio traveling across the Interstate 70 Fulton Bridge will have a tougher time getting through Wheeling and to places like Wheeling Hospital starting Monday. Swank Construction crews return Monday from a month-long break to continue the $215 million project. That means I-70 eastbound will be closed from Exit 1B the U.S. 250/W.Va. Rt. 2-16th Street exit to Exit 2A the Oglebay Park exit. The U.S. 250 on-ramp to I-70 East also will be closed.
